Excellent product for home testing of INR (blood clotting time.),
This is an excellent and handy device which, when used with CoaguChek XS testing strips, accurately tests, displays and stores PT/PTT/INR results (reflecting blood clotting time) which people who take anti-coagulant medications need to do. I have used the CoaguChek XS system for several years (and its predecessor before that) with no problem. Contrary to the previous review, I cannot imagine anyone who has read the instructions having difficulty operating the system correctly and safely. The CoaguChek XS strips must be purchased separately. A problem for home users is that the minimum order for the XS strips, which expire after one year, is usually 48 strips; most people only need to check INR once per month. CoaguCheK Lancets (minimum order generally 200; another issue for home users) are handy for getting a good blood sample. To operate the system:
1) turn on the device by pressing the “i” button (assuming you have installed the required four AAA batteries, set the correct time and date and installed the current code chip matching the XS strip, all per the instruction booklet);
2) insert the XS strip (per instructions);
3) press the “M” button to match the strip to the code chip;
4) when prompted by the device and after disinfecting the collection site (side of a fingertip), collect the blood sample and, within 15 seconds of using the lancet, apply a drop of blood to the target area on the strip;
5) when PT/PTT results are displayed, press the set button to display and read INR results.

|A huge money and time saver!,
The Coaguchek XS is relatively easy to use. The set up is a little complicated so watch the instruction DVD carefully (it’s similar to setting up the time on a digital watch). I purposely picked this model and brand because it’s the one my cardiologist use in his office in lieu of traditional and painful venipuncture blood draws. However, if your PTINR is too high you will get an error message. However, even the lab testing won’t give you an accurate INR number if it’s greater than 12. They’ll just tell you it’s greater than 12 and you have to go to the hospital.

|Worst Product Ever…Bar-none!,
The absolute least user friendly piece of laboratory equipment I have ever had the misfortune of using. I will be honest, my nurse seems to be able to get this thing to work about 80-85% of the time. I have not yet managed to get it to work. You want to experience the worse feeling ever. Try looking incompetent in front of your patient, and worse yet, try losing business because you have to send your patient to an outside lab. I am so increadibly angry at this product, I didn’t even bother shipping it back. The unbelievable relief and gratification of smashing it to bits in the parking lot was the best part about the whole experience. If you did better I’m glad to hear it. If you didn’t get this yet…well i’d say save yourself the pain, aggrevation and embaressment.
