I searched for a place where I could try out the Siemens’ top of the line hearing aid. I have been using hearing aids for the past 15 years, and the last time I putchased a set was 2002, and I was afraid that these eight year old aids would soon fail. At the time I bought these, they were among the highest priced and recommended, and were not Siemens. In July 2p1p I found the Siemens being sold by COSTCO, and they allowed a full 90 days trial during which I could return them for a full refund. I boutght them partially based on the “Bluetooth” feature included, along with ear molds, BTE and in the ear speakers connected witha wire, rather than a hollow tube.. Total price for the pair was just over $2200, a bargain.

I tried out the new hearing aid for over six weeks, as I knew it took some time to accommodate to a new device. Then I returned the whole package to COSTCO and got my full refund. WHY?: I tried out every aspect of the Siements several times and wore them continuously for those six weeks. I found that the basic sound propagation quality of the device was significantly inferior to my eight year old hearing aid. I did find out that the in-the-ear speakers did deliver good quality sound when using the Bluetooth option, which apparently meant that the Siemens’ microphone/amplifier in the BTE unitwere the cause of the poor sound quality when I was not using the Bluetooth component.

Another thing I did not like about the Siemens was that the BTE had no volume control that I, the user, could access. To adjust the volume I had to return to COSTCO for the hearing aid tech to use her software tochange the volume setting.

I do admire Siemens offering their products at much lower prices than most of their competitors, BUTthere is still a great need in the industry for the provision of performance specifications of their devices. And for independent testing and evaluation.

The Siemens 701 has many many programming options that would have solved the fairly negative report I just read above.
    Here are my observations:
The button on each unit can be programmed for whatever you prefer and even multiple choices including volume. For example I chose to have my buttons turn the unit on or off with a long press and with short presses toggle through three programs that I use most. 1. Automatic 2. Restaurant (Forward directional Speech over Noise) and 3. Music (No limitations of brass, drums, etc.) The volume levels of each have been set by trial and are preset when I do not have the remote with me. The TEC Remote allows me to add Bluetooth Phone and Bluetooth transmit from a TV for instance to the other three programs giving me 5 Programs. Again it takes some visits to get these exactly where you want them set. For instance I found having the mikes turn off with Bluetooth phone kept surrounding noise to a minimum particularly since I found that I needed nearly maximum volume to hear callers in an SUV going highway speeds. (Note that the remote picks up your voice for the phone not the HA mikes.) In addition the TEC Remote has both volume and tone controls that you can adjust and they will stay changed until you remove the HA battery and restart. Each of the 5 Programs can be adjusted individually by the user with the TEC Remote. Most AUD’s will not set up one this complicated on your first try since it can confuse some new users. For example to adjust volume on the Bluetooth Transmitter program it must be receiving a signal from the transmitter. So the user would think his hearing aid volume was not working right if he left it in “Transmitter and Mic” and walked out of range of the transmitter. He should have toggled to “Automatic” when finished listening to the audio stream. So if you do not like bells and whistles just have the AUD set it up to work automatically and have the HA buttons change volume and forget the TEC Remote. You can always add it later.
